Asia Pacific University (APU) celebrated World Environment Day 2025 with “Paws and Plants,” a three-day student-led initiative that brought together sustainability, compassion, and campus-wide engagement. Held from 24 to 26 June, the event was spearheaded by the APU Sustainable Future Fusion (SFF) Club, and featured pet therapy corners, terrarium workshops, eco-awareness booths, and SDG-aligned activities that inspired students, staff, and community partners alike.

Overview of the Event

Across three vibrant days, the event transformed the APU campus into an immersive, interactive, and inclusive experience designed to educate, engage, and empower.

Leadership and Execution

The event was made possible by the vision and leadership of Ms. Cynthia Mala Paul, Lecturer at the School of Business and Management and Advisor to the SFF Club. Despite facing last-minute venue changes and logistical hurdles, the organising team demonstrated flexibility and resilience.

“Paws and Plants” was spearheaded by Chai Zhe Hee, Vice Secretary of SFF Club and student of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence), who led the event’s operations and creative direction. Strategic leadership was provided by Khoo Lay Yang, President of SFF Club and student of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computer Science (Cyber Security).

“Paws and Plants resonated because it was built on something real—our love for nature, for animals, and for each other,” said Chai Zhe Hee.

“APU SFF will continue to bring meaningful events to APU students, promoting sustainability and SDG awareness in everything we do,” added Khoo Lay Yang, Founder and President of APU SFF.

SDG Alignment and Impact

“Paws and Plants” was deeply rooted in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly:
  • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – Promoting eco-conscious living through workshops and products.
  • SDG 15: Life on Land – Advocating for animal welfare and biodiversity through hands-on interactions and educational outreach.
  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals – Collaborating with local green entrepreneurs, NGOs, and environmental groups.

Collaborators and Sponsors

The event would not have been possible without the generous support and collaboration from partners who believed in the mission of SFF and APU:
  • Go Paws Fishery and Pet Center – Main sponsor of the pet fair
  • Aquaplant Culture International – Aquascaping workshop and talk session
  • Plant Society Malaysia (PSM) – Contributed plants and botanical design
  • The Omni Lab@The Linc KL – Hosted the terrarium workshop
  • Free Tree Society@Bangsar – Provided 50 plants for public giveaway
  • Casper Cha Jun An (TARUMT) – Invited plant artist and terrarium designer

A Lasting Gift

As a token of appreciation and environmental commitment, the organisers donated a large paludarium titled “Awakening” to the APU School of Business. Designed by Casper Cha Jun An and presented by Khoo Lay Yang & Chai Zhe Hee from the SFF Club, the living installation symbolizes harmony between natural and academic growth.

A Legacy of Action

“Paws and Plants” is a testament to what can be achieved through empathy, creativity, and collaboration. It reminded the APU community that environmental awareness is not confined to one day—it is a mindset, a culture, and a commitment to living more sustainably.

With the continued efforts of the SFF Club and its dedicated student leaders, APU reaffirms its role as a university that not only fosters academic excellence but also nurtures global citizens who care deeply about the planet and its future.
