In conjunction with World Environment Day 2024, students from the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) took the lead in promoting environmental consciousness and community empowerment through a meaningful event held on June 13, 2024. Organized by the student-led club Sustainable Future Fusion (SFF), the initiative brought together APU students and refugee children from Yayasan Chow Kit for a day of learning, creativity, and sustainability.

As the President of APU SFF, I am glad to have had the opportunity to organize and coordinate this impactful celebration. Seeing both students and refugee children actively participate in activities that foster environmental responsibility was truly inspiring. This event also marked a proud moment for APU, as it was featured in The Sun newspaper: World Enviroment Day, underscoring the significance of youth-led environmental action in Malaysia.

The event kicked off with an insightful seminar on sustainable living, moderated by Ms. Cynthia Mala Paul Dorairaj. The session featured passionate guest speakers Neal and Nigel Edwin from Rent-A-Pot, who shared valuable insights on eco-conscious lifestyles and environmental stewardship. Their talk inspired participants to reflect on how small changes can make a big difference for our planet.

Following the seminar, attendees participated in hands-on sustainability workshops. Refugee children and students collaborated to create terrariums using recycled plastic bottles and craft eco-friendly coasters from old t-shirts, emphasizing the importance of recyclingupcycling, and creative reuse. The activities encouraged practical, fun approaches to sustainability.

The event also featured a display of student-designed posters highlighting key environmental issues, along with interactive booths that educated participants on pollution, climate change, and sustainable practices. These activities sparked meaningful conversations and further strengthened APU’s role in shaping environmentally and socially conscious graduates.

Beyond this celebration, APU’s commitment to sustainability is ongoing. Through the SFF club, students have initiated programs focused on food security and digital empowerment. This includes volunteering with The Lost Food Project to distribute surplus food to underserved communities and conducting digital literacy workshops for refugees and B40 youth.

These initiatives reflect APU’s holistic approach to education—one that integrates environmental responsibilitysocial impact, and community engagement. Through such student-led projects, APU continues to empower youth to be changemakers for a sustainable future.
